Emotional distress is a medical issue that compromises the quality of life. It is not a weakness and should not be stigmatized or perceived as shameful. Having the insight to recognize that you need help from a professional is a strength and indicates good judgment. While psychotropic medication treats vegetative signs of mental health ( I.e. sleep and appetite disturbances as well as agitation or feeling slowed down) it has side effects and doesn’t fundamentally change destructive thought processes or behavior . Psychotherapy gives you the tools to change thought processes and behavior to improve functioning in your work and relationships which lead to greater self esteem, life fulfillment and meaning in life ( a by product which is happiness). Providing such treatment in a safe, nonjudgmental, nurturing environment , where you can feel understood and valued is my view of the key to successful psychotherapy. While it can be helpful talking to a friend, what you tell them is not legally confidential as it would be with a licensed psychologist and they don’t have the objectivity necessary to give you the results of a trained professional. My genuine concern for my patients, knowledge of medical issues that contribute to mental health problems as well as my having extensive training and over 35 years of experience treating patients with a multitude of issues has been successful in my patients improving the quality of their lives and feeling empowered and hopeful.
